Rural property law, from the ground up
David is a farmer's son, but with two older brothers in the family business he decided to forge a different career path. He first obtained a degree in Financial Studies and Business Law from Stirling University, which included accountancy and economics, before pursuing his interest in the law with a law degree from Strathclyde University.
An experienced commercial lawyer, David has chosen to specialise in rural property law, including the buying, selling and leasing of all types of rural property. He has particular expertise in the acquisition and disposal of farms and forestry, and in renewable energy projects.
David provides specialised advice on agricultural law, mineral rights, servitudes, telecoms mast leases and sporting rights.
Renewables experience
- Land options for wind farm development
- Overseeing agreements for wind farm development or accesses
- Section 75 agreements for landowners for wind farm developments
- Leases for windfarms

Outside the office
Married with three young boys who keep him and his wife very busy, David still finds time for basketball as president of Kirkcudbright Basketball Club, and helps the basketball team at Kirkcudbright Academy with skills development.
In his spare time David deals with murder and mayhem, usually through the medium of a good book. Despite spending most of his day with paperwork, he still loves to read and manages to fill the bookshelves before his wife can.
